Health & Safety

Responsibilities

At The School of Modern Skills, Safety is a line management responsibility. Teachers are responsible for safety in their own areas and for the implementation of relevant safety procedures. The School Health and Safety Manager monitors the safety generally and the operation of safety procedures to make sure all these procedures are followed by all the staff.

Principal Responsibility

The school Principal reviews and approve the health and safety policy along with other operations of safety procedures and have them implemented to all the staff and students.

The responsibility of the principal includes,

  • To understand and comply with the laws, expectations and responsibilities placed on schools by the civil authorities in Dubai and the UAE
  • To guide and advise on all health and safety matters.
  • To ensure that the appropriate safety education and training are coordinated and carried out using both in-house and external resources.
  • To undertake regular and appropriate revision and auditing of the school safety procedures and methods of operation, to ensure that they are kept up to date.
  • To ensure that adequate fire protection and prevention measures are provided.

Health and Safety Manager Responsibility:

  • The Manager of the school HSE & operations is responsible for ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and reviewed on a regular basis, as part of a safety audit.
  • Audits and Health & Safety tours will be carried out as per the risk assessment review cycle and more frequently if there have been any significant changes to the building, machinery, equipment, work practices or personnel.
  • The assessment team will consist of a number of staff, at least one person being 'competent' to make assessments concerning the activities or processes involved.

The purpose of the assessment is to:

  • Identify hazards;
  • Assess the nature and seriousness of the hazard and subsequent risks;
  • Avoid risks by elimination;
  • Control any remaining risks:
  • Selection of control measures;
  • Maintenance and use of controls;
  • Monitoring and surveillance;
  • Supervision, information, instruction & training.

Security Services

The security on the campus has been improved with highly professional, skilled & SIRA certified security guards. The visitors must sign on the entry register and obtain a visitor badge/ lanyard to access the premises. All the security guards are compliant with the legal requirements having SIRA certification. Each security guard has been assigned at certain gates to control the access and entries.

To ensure the safety of the premises and infrastructure, the night security guard has been assigned to patrol at different times during the night to visit the sensitive areas to ensure the safety of the campus.

MEDICAL CARE

The groundwork for good education is good health

The clinic is well equipped and with an automated electronic defibrillator, a nebulizer and oxygen apparatus, which all help to provide appropriate medical first aid response. 

The school participates in health campaigns with the school doctor giving regular health talks to students to promote a healthy lifestyle. If the children are unwell at school, they will be cared for at the clinic until collected by a parent or a guardian. 

Separte Clinics for boys and girls

SMS has clinics one in each campus with school doctor and nursing staff to ensure students health and safety. The clinic team provides first aid to sick and injured students during school hours on the school campus. 

The clinic administers medicines and refers students for further follow up with medical practitioners or to emergency services if needed. The clinic is well equipped with an automated external defibrillator, a nebulizer and Oxygen apparatus which all help to provide appropriate medical first aid response. 

Medical Examination

SMS requires the school doctor to examine all students in KG1 and grades 1,4,7,10 as well as all new students, it’s a quick and simple procedure for which parents are notified in advance. 

Our medical staff also carry out annual height and weight checks. DHA school health section in cooperation with Eye specialist hospitals conduct annual vision screening to our students.

TRANSPORTATION

SMS Transportation

SMS offers school bus transportation for students through Emirates Transport, a school transport company operating in the UAE since 1981.  Emirates transport works closely with the school administration team to ensure that parents and students receive the best service possible.

Emirates Transport is maintaining and follows strict safety measures for students by the Road Transport Authority of Dubai.

All buses are equipped with a video surveillance system and first aid kit. Each bus is supervised by a Bus Attendant to receive calls during bus travel time.
